Butterfly Garden - Handcrafted Intarsia Wooden Wall Art

A butterfly rests for a moment among leaves and flowers.

Butterfly Garden is a handcrafted wooden wall artwork created from individually shaped pieces of natural wood, combining relief intarsia, carving and hand-painted details.

At the centre of the composition, the butterfly spreads its wings across a dark wooden background, surrounded by softly curved leaves, a flower and flowing botanical forms. The composition is calm and balanced, allowing the butterfly to become the clear focal point while the surrounding elements create the feeling of a small, stylised garden.

Natural Wood, Colour and Texture

One of the things we love most about intarsia is the possibility of creating an image through the natural differences between woods.

For Butterfly Garden, we used walnut, pine, poplar and a dense dark hardwood. Their contrasting tones — from pale cream and warm golden shades to deep brown — form much of the artwork's natural palette.

The body and antennae of the butterfly are made from the dark hardwood, a material we were working with for the first time. Its remarkable density, fine texture and rich chocolate-brown colour made it particularly suitable for these delicate elements.

The coloured sections of the wings were approached differently. Victoria first created a subtle relief texture in the wooden surface and then painted each section by hand with oil colours. The paint follows the texture rather than hiding it, allowing the carved surface beneath to remain visible and giving the wings a more lively, tactile character.

The result is a combination of natural wood colour and carefully introduced painted accents, with the brightest details concentrated around the butterfly itself.

Relief Intarsia

The artwork is not assembled as a completely flat image.

Individual elements are shaped, rounded and worked at different heights, creating gentle relief and allowing light to move across the surface. Grain direction is also considered when selecting and positioning each piece, so that the natural structure of the wood becomes part of the composition.

This gives the artwork a sculptural quality that changes subtly depending on the direction of the light and the position from which it is viewed.

The Butterfly Collection

Butterfly Garden is part of our Butterfly Collection — a series of handcrafted wooden artworks exploring the butterfly through different compositions.

Rather than repeating the same design, each artwork has its own rhythm and character while sharing a common visual language: natural wood, relief intarsia, botanical forms and the contrast between delicate organic shapes and solid material.

Its companion piece, Butterfly in Flight, approaches the same symbol through a more dynamic composition, with a stronger sense of movement.

Together, the two artworks explore two different moments: the butterfly in motion and the butterfly at rest.

Made by Hand

Every element of Butterfly Garden is individually cut, shaped, sanded and fitted in our family workshop in Bulgaria.

The frame is made from white pine and finished with dark-toned wood oil. The 3 mm Okoume plywood backing is finished in the same way, creating a consistent dark background that allows the lighter wooden elements to stand out.

As with all natural materials, grain, colour and texture vary from one piece of wood to another. For this reason, even when the same design is recreated, every finished artwork will have its own character and will never be completely identical to another.
