The Warrior Within - A handcrafted wooden diptych inspired by the philosophy of the samurai

Some swords are forged for battle.

Others are forged to remind us that the greatest victory has never been over another person.

It has always been over ourselves.

The Way Within is a one-of-a-kind wooden diptych created as a commissioned artwork to celebrate a 30th birthday. Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, samurai philosophy and Zen, the piece explores the relationship between strength and restraint, movement and stillness, discipline and harmony.

Two swords stand apart.

They never cross.

They never fight.

Between them lies silence.

And that silence becomes the heart of the composition.

Crafted from solid elm, the diptych combines traditional wood intarsia, hand carving and natural oil finishes, allowing the character of the wood itself to become part of the artwork.

Symbolism

The Katana

The longer sword represents principles, responsibility and the courage to walk one's own path.

The Wakizashi

The shorter companion sword symbolizes self-discipline, humility and inner balance. Together they remind us that true strength comes from mastering ourselves before trying to master the world.

Enso (円相)

The unfinished Zen circle is one of the oldest symbols of Japanese philosophy.

Rather than perfection, it represents an ongoing journey.

Growth without end.

A life that remains open to learning.

The circle is intentionally divided between the two panels and never fully closes. The viewer's eye completes what the artwork deliberately leaves unfinished.

Ma (間)

The empty space between the two panels is not empty at all.

In Japanese aesthetics, this interval is called Ma—the meaningful space between forms.

It is where balance exists.

Where silence becomes part of the artwork.

獅 (Lion)

Rather than depicting the lion itself, the artwork uses its Japanese kanji.

Here the lion represents quiet confidence, dignity and courage—not aggression.

己に勝つ

"Conquer yourself."

A well-known principle associated with martial arts and personal discipline.

It reminds us that the greatest battle is not fought against others, but within ourselves.

三十 (Thirty)

The traditional seal marks the beginning of a new decade.

Not as a number, but as a milestone.

A reminder that maturity is measured not by age, but by the wisdom gained along the way.

Craftsmanship

Each element of the diptych was handcrafted in the MossArtum studio.

The swords were created using wood intarsia, while the inscriptions were individually carved from solid walnut. The expressive Enso circle was hand-painted to preserve the spontaneous gesture of the brush, and the richly textured elm was finished with natural oils to reveal the unique character of the wood.

Rather than hiding the grain, the artwork embraces it—allowing nature itself to become part of the composition.
